Wellness In The Wild

The Altura Philosophy

A movement towards more meaningful time in wild places.

Studios, programmes, and carefully constructed environments now promise restoration through structure and control. Yet the origins of wellbeing were never confined to walls.

For most of human history, renewal came through connection with landscape, movement beneath open skies, nourishing food grown from the land, and the perspective that only vast natural environments can provide.

Altura exists to return wellness to that setting. Our journeys bring together movement practice, thoughtful hospitality, and some of Africa’s most extraordinary wilderness landscapes.

In these places, wellbeing emerges naturally from the environment itself.

Movement as Foundation

Movement sits at the heart of every Altura journey.

Whether yoga, pilates, breathwork, or restorative practice, these sessions provide a daily anchor, a moment to reconnect with the body and begin the day with clarity.

Practices take place outdoors wherever possible.

Sunrise over open plains. A quiet deck overlooking distant mountains. The stillness of early morning before the landscape awakens. In such environments, movement becomes less about performance and more about awareness.

Landscape as Teacher

Africa’s landscapes have a unique ability to shift perspective. The scale of the horizon, the rhythm of wildlife, and the quiet intelligence of the natural world invite a different way of paying attention.

Time slows. The mind settles.

And the noise of daily life begins to fall away. Altura retreats are intentionally designed to leave space for these moments, through walking safaris, time spent observing nature, and unstructured hours in which guests can simply be present in extraordinary surroundings

Conversation and Perspective

Altura retreats are not only spaces for physical restoration, but also for reflection and exchange.

Evenings often become moments of thoughtful conversation, about conservation, design, food systems, creativity, and the future of the landscapes guests have spent the day exploring.

These gatherings are informal and unstructured.

The intention is simply to bring interesting people together in a place where meaningful dialogue happens naturally.

Stewardship

The landscapes that host Altura journeys are not only beautiful; they are also carefully protected. Many of our partner lodges operate within private conservancies that play a vital role in safeguarding wildlife and supporting surrounding communities.

By hosting retreats in these places, Altura contributes to conservation efforts that ensure these ecosystems remain intact for generations to come.

Guests are not simply visiting wilderness. They are participating in its protection.

Space for Perspective

Ultimately, the philosophy behind Altura is simple. Modern life rarely allows the space needed to reconnect with ourselves, with others, and with the natural world. But in the presence of vast landscapes, thoughtful company, and a slower rhythm of living, that connection can return surprisingly quickly.

Altura exists to create the conditions for that shift.

Movement. Nature. Nourishment. Conversation.

A return to what matters.

Extraordinary Places

Altura retreats take place in a small network of remarkable safari lodges across Kenya.

These properties are chosen for their:

• Design and sense of place

• Exceptional guiding

• Strong conservation ethos

• Intimate scale

•Outstanding food programmes

Landscapes include the private conservancies of Lewa, Laikipia, the Maasai Mara, and the wild ecosystems surrounding Tsavo. In these places, wellness emerges naturally from the environment itself.

Three Pillars

Conversation

Evenings become spaces for reflective conversation. Guests gather around long tables for thoughtful dining and open dialogue.

Topics might include:

  • The future of conservation

  • Regenerative agriculture

  • Design and architecture

  • Wellness and longevity

  • Investing in nature

The aim is not formal programming but intelligent exchange among interesting people.

Exploration

Afternoons are spent exploring the surrounding landscape with expert guides.

Experiences may include:

  • Walking safaris

  • Horseback riding

  • Wildlife tracking

  • Conservation visits

These experiences reconnect guests with the natural world in a direct and meaningful way.

Movement

Each day begins with movement practice led by exceptional instructors.

Sessions may include:

  • Yoga

  • Pilates

  • Breathwork

  • Mobility and recovery

Practices take place outdoors wherever possible, on decks overlooking valleys, beneath acacia trees, or on open plains at sunrise.

Movement becomes a way of grounding the day.

THE FOUNDER

Altura was founded by Clara, who was born in Africa and grew up with a deep connection to the landscapes, wildlife, and people that define the continent. There is a saying often shared among those who have spent time in the bush: once the African dust gets into your shoes, it is very difficult to remove. The pull of the land is quiet but enduring, drawing people back again and again to its wide horizons and untamed rhythms.

Her work and travels have taken her across Africa’s wild places, spending time with conservationists, guides, and communities who dedicate their lives to protecting these extraordinary ecosystems. Through these experiences she developed close friendships with individuals working at the forefront of conservation, from wildlife veterinarians and field researchers to architects and designers shaping a new generation of conservation-led lodges.

These encounters revealed something profound: the bush is not only a place of wildlife and beauty, but a space for reflection, creativity, and renewal.

Altura was created to share that experience.

The company brings together exceptional safari lodges, thoughtful programming, and small groups of curious travellers to create journeys that feel both deeply restorative and intellectually enriching.

For Clara, the greatest gift is to introduce people to the rhythms of Africa, not simply as a destination, but as a landscape that has the power to shift perspective, restore balance, and inspire a lasting connection to the natural world.
